A country code, not a programme category
IANA’s official database classifies .tv as a country-code top-level domain associated with Tuvalu. Just as .lu refers to Luxembourg, .tv has a geographical origin. Reading the letters as “television” does not change that classification.

What an audience reads is not the whole rulebook
For a video business, these letters may feel especially relevant. That concerns perception and positioning. The association alone does not explain how the extension operates or the terms that apply.
The reasoning also works the other way. A country-code extension is not automatically restricted to businesses from that country. Check the rules of each extension rather than inferring eligibility from its appearance.
A small test before choosing
Show the full domain name to a few people in your intended audience. What activity do they imagine? Where do they expect your business to be based? How do they say the name aloud? Their answers can reveal whether the extension helps or needs a fresh explanation every time.
Then check renewal terms, any special pricing and transfer options with the provider you are considering. A good creative idea also deserves a practical check.
The .tv story shows that a domain name is both a technical identifier and a communication choice. Those dimensions complement each other, but answer different questions.
