Google.com, one minute outside Google

One minute and an unusual reward

In its 2015 security review, Google confirmed that Sanmay Ved had been able to buy google.com through Google Domains for one minute. It awarded him $6,006.13, a numerical nod to Google’s name, then doubled the reward when he donated it to charity.

This does not mean he bought the company, its search engines or its users’ data. The incident concerned the domain name registration.

The source does not establish a missed renewal

The most dramatic retelling sometimes becomes “Google forgot to renew its domain name”. Google’s account describes a temporary purchase and a finding rewarded through its security programme. On its own, it does not establish a missed renewal.

The distinction matters. A fault in a registration service and a forgotten deadline require different responses. Understanding the actual problem comes before choosing a safeguard.

What your business can learn

Your business does not need to be Google to depend heavily on a domain name. Email, a website and access to some services may all rely on it. If it becomes unavailable, the consequences can reach far beyond your home page.

Know who manages the registration, who can access the account and who monitors renewal. Keep a contact person and a communication channel available even if your usual email stops working. A memorable story then becomes a practical question about responsibilities.
